Handheld Gaming Console Market Statistics 2026 [Nintendo, Valve and the PC Handheld]

Handheld gaming console market statistics 2026 showing Nintendo Switch 2 sales, Steam Deck share, PC handheld shipments, regional sales, and market revenue.

Handheld gaming console market share has no single scoreboard. Nintendo reports sell-in units, IDC and Omdia estimate PC handheld volumes, Valve samples opt-in Steam users, Circana tracks US retail, and Global Market Insights models global revenue.

This report sets those figures side by side with their periods: Nintendo data through June 30, 2026, Circana through July 2026, and Valve’s August 2026 survey.

Who Leads Handheld Gaming Console Market Share in 2026?

Nintendo leads every published unit count. Switch 2 sell-in reached 23.68 million units by June 30, 2026, about 13 months after its June 5, 2025 launch.

Sell-in covers units Nintendo ships to retailers plus its own direct sales. It is not a count of consoles bought by consumers.

No firm publishes one unit share table covering both Nintendo and PC handhelds. IDC’s estimates for the four largest PC handheld brands add up to just under 6 million shipments across 2022 to 2024.

Omdia counted 1.7 million PC gaming handhelds sold in 2024. Nintendo shipped 19.86 million Switch 2 units in its fiscal year ended March 31, 2026.

Revenue share figures conflict. Global Market Insights (GMI) lists Nintendo at over 26.7% of 2025 gaming handheld revenue in its key takeaways, and at an estimated 69% in its competitive analysis.

The same report credits Nintendo, Valve, GPD Technology, AYANEO and Anbernic with a combined 78.6% of 2025 revenue.

The four brands are Valve’s Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go and MSI Claw. IDC’s count excludes GPD, AYANEO and OneXPlayer devices.

The Verge’s math on IDC’s figures put cumulative Steam Deck shipments at upwards of 3.7 million by the end of 2024. Our Steam Deck sales and adoption figures track the device’s pricing since then.

Omdia’s numbers use a wider scope. It counted 1.7 million PC gaming handhelds sold in 2024, projected 2.3 million for 2025, and forecasts 4.7 million a year by 2029.

Circana’s Mat Piscatella said on the Xbox Expansion Pass podcast that the ROG Xbox Ally had a strong first month, then fell back. Asked whether it dented Steam Deck sales, he said no.

He gave no unit figures. Asus’s own revenue guidance appears in our ROG Ally revenue breakdown.

How Did US Hardware Share Shift in June and July 2026?

GMI Revenue Split: Handheld Gaming Console Market Share by Product Type

GMI’s model covers dedicated handheld consoles, hybrid systems, handheld gaming PCs, Android gaming handhelds and branded accessories. It excludes game software, subscriptions, smartphones and tablets.

Revenue rose from $7.00 billion in 2024 to $12.87 billion in 2025, which GMI ties to the new hybrid-console cycle. GMI projects $12.4 billion for 2026 and $16.6 billion by 2035, a 3.3% CAGR.

Handheld Gaming PCs gain the most share in GMI’s projection. The public summary does not quantify the remaining product categories.

GMI also expects concentration to ease, from a Herfindahl-Hirschman Index of about 6,200 in 2022 to around 1,950 by 2035.

Its unit forecast grows from 37.8 million in 2026 to 41.0 million in 2035. Retro-focused brands such as Anbernic and Miyoo sit inside GMI’s company scope, and our retro vs modern handheld comparison separates those tiers.

Retroid is also on GMI’s list of covered vendors. Its 2026 price moves are tracked in our Retroid Pocket pricing data.
