Sony has never published a unit total for the PlayStation Portal. The hard numbers come from Circana’s US retail tracking, Sony’s own price and feature announcements, and PS5 shipment data. How Many PlayStation Portals Have Been Sold?

There is no official figure. Sony reports PS5 shipments each quarter but has not broken out Portal units.

The closest measured figure is an attach rate. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella reported that the Portal had a 7% attach rate to lifetime US PS5 hardware sales at the end of 2025.

The widely quoted “2 million” figure is not from Circana or Sony. VGChartz produced it by applying the 7% rate to its own estimate of 28.66 million US PS5 units sold through 2025.

Circana has shared three attach-rate readings since the end of 2024. Two were published as thresholds (“over”), so the values below are floors, not exact shares.

The attach rate measures Portal buyers against US PS5 hardware sold. It does not count Portal owners who use the device only for cloud streaming without a console.

Is PlayStation Portal the Best-Selling PS5 Accessory?

By US dollar sales, it has led repeatedly. In each period below where Circana also named a unit leader, that leader was a DualSense controller.

The Portal ranked first among US accessories in dollar sales for full-year 2024. In 2025 the annual title went to the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, which Circana said was bought by 24% of Switch 2 owners.

The wider category has been shrinking. Circana’s September 2025 report showed year-to-date spending on Remote Play Devices, the segment that contains the Portal, down 9% from a year earlier.

US accessory spending in key months

Circana’s monthly accessory totals, in millions of US dollars, give scale to the Portal’s revenue wins. December periods cover five weeks.

July 2026 was the lowest July for accessory spending since 2019, when the total was $144 million, according to Circana.

How Much Does the PlayStation Portal Cost in 2026?

Sony raised Portal prices in four listed markets on 2 April 2026. The company cited “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” in its PlayStation.Blog announcement on 27 March 2026.

The US price had stayed at $199.99 since the November 2023 launch. The same round moved PS5 consoles up as well.

PlayStation Portal price history in Japan

Japan has seen two Portal price increases. Sony Japan lifted it from ¥29,980 to ¥34,980 on 2 September 2024, then to ¥39,980 on 2 April 2026.

Portal vs PS5 console prices in the US

Sony’s US recommended retail prices from 2 April 2026 place the Portal at $249.99 and the lowest-priced PS5 model at $599.99.

Can PlayStation Portal Work Without a PS5?

Yes, for select games. Cloud streaming entered beta in November 2024 and launched fully on 5 November 2025 at 6pm PT.

The feature requires a PlayStation Plus Premium membership on an adult account. Sony said thousands of PS5 games in a user’s digital library supported streaming at launch, plus hundreds from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog.

Circana named the Portal the top accessory by dollar sales in November and December 2025, the two months after the launch. Circana has not attributed those results to cloud streaming.

PlayStation Portal Sales Worldwide: What Sony Has Not Published

Every Portal sales figure above is US-only. Circana’s attach rates and rankings measure US retail sell-through.

Sony reported 95.3 million PS5 units shipped worldwide as of 30 June 2026, on a sell-in basis. It shipped 1.6 million PS5 units in the April to June 2026 quarter, down from 2.5 million a year earlier.

Sony counted 125 million PlayStation monthly active users in June 2026. Account activity trends sit in this PSN and Xbox network data, and digital purchase habits in these PlayStation Store sales figures.

Applying the US attach rate to the global PS5 base would be an extrapolation, not a measurement. Until Sony discloses a number, the 7% Circana reading is the firmest PlayStation Portal sales data available.
