Sony publishes a PlayStation Network monthly active user count every quarter. It measures unique accounts that played games or used services online on PlayStation during the last month of the quarter, based on company research.

The count peaks each December and falls back by March. December 2025 hit 132 million. March 2026 came in at 125 million, a 1% year-on-year rise, and Sony’s annual report describes the figure as over 120 million as of March 31, 2026.

Why Microsoft’s 500 Million Is Not a Network Count

Microsoft’s proxy statement puts it plainly: in fiscal 2025, the company served 500 million monthly active users across platforms and devices. That spans Xbox consoles, PC and mobile, and it includes players of Activision Blizzard and King titles who have never touched an Xbox.

Microsoft has not published a console-network-only monthly figure since retiring the Xbox Live brand. Sony’s 125 million is anchored to PlayStation accounts. Both platforms charge for online multiplayer. Neither company reports subscriber totals any more, which is the single biggest gap in any PSN vs Xbox Live comparison.

Sony last published a PlayStation Plus number in March 2023: 47.4 million. What Xbox Live Gold Became

Xbox Live Gold stopped existing on September 14, 2023. Members moved automatically to Xbox Game Pass Core at the same $9.99 a month. On October 1, 2025 Microsoft renamed Core to Essential and Standard to Premium, and raised Ultimate from $19.99 to $29.99.

Sony moved the other way. On May 18, 2026 it confirmed a US increase for PlayStation Plus Essential on shorter plans, effective May 20: $10.99 a month, up from $9.99, and $27.99 a quarter, up from $24.99. The fiscal calendars do not line up. Sony’s FY2025 closed March 31, 2026. Microsoft’s FY2026 closed June 30, 2026. These are each company’s latest completed full year.

Sony’s Game & Network Services segment took ¥4,685.7 billion in FY2025, essentially flat on the prior year, and posted a record ¥463.3 billion operating income, up 11.6%. Game Pass generated nearly $5 billion in annual revenue in fiscal 2025, the first time it crossed that mark. The quarterly trend since has been negative on every reading except the first.

Amy Hood guided for a further mid-single-digit decline in Xbox content and services revenue in the September 2026 quarter. Satya Nadella said Microsoft expects to return the business to growth in fiscal 2027.
