PSN vs Xbox Live Statistics 2026 – Subscriber Comparison Data

PlayStation Network reached 132 million monthly active users in December 2025, the highest quarter-end figure Sony has reported. Microsoft counts a different thing entirely: 500 million monthly active users across console, PC and mobile in fiscal 2025. This breakdown covers what each number measures, what both companies still disclose about paid memberships, and where the revenue lines sit after Microsoft’s July 2026 results.

How Many People Use PSN vs Xbox Live in 2026?

Sony publishes a PlayStation Network monthly active user count every quarter. It measures unique accounts that played games or used services online on PlayStation during the last month of the quarter, based on company research.

The count peaks each December and falls back by March. December 2025 hit 132 million. March 2026 came in at 125 million, a 1% year-on-year rise, and Sony’s annual report describes the figure as over 120 million as of March 31, 2026.

Why Microsoft’s 500 Million Is Not a Network Count

Microsoft’s proxy statement puts it plainly: in fiscal 2025, the company served 500 million monthly active users across platforms and devices. That spans Xbox consoles, PC and mobile, and it includes players of Activision Blizzard and King titles who have never touched an Xbox.

Microsoft has not published a console-network-only monthly figure since retiring the Xbox Live brand. Sony’s 125 million is anchored to PlayStation accounts. The two are not the same measurement and should not be read as a 4-to-1 gap. Wider platform context sits in this Xbox ecosystem data roundup.

PSN vs Xbox Live Paid Memberships in 2026

Both platforms charge for online multiplayer. Neither company reports subscriber totals any more, which is the single biggest gap in any PSN vs Xbox Live comparison.

Sony last published a PlayStation Plus number in March 2023: 47.4 million. Microsoft last gave a Game Pass count in February 2024, when Xbox president Sarah Bond cited 34 million members, a total that already absorbed the former Xbox Live Gold base. Bloomberg reported in July 2026 that Game Pass sits near 30 million, which is a press estimate rather than a company disclosure.

Matthew Ball, Xbox chief strategy officer, said publicly on June 8, 2026 that the October 2025 price rise cost the service millions of subscribers. Tier-level detail sits in this Game Pass and PS Plus side-by-side, and Sony’s own membership picture in the PS Plus member count report.

What Xbox Live Gold Became

Xbox Live Gold stopped existing on September 14, 2023. Members moved automatically to Xbox Game Pass Core at the same $9.99 a month. On October 1, 2025 Microsoft renamed Core to Essential and Standard to Premium, and raised Ultimate from $19.99 to $29.99.

PSN vs Xbox Live Subscription Prices

Microsoft reversed part of the 2025 increase on April 21, 2026. Ultimate dropped to $22.99 and PC Game Pass to $13.99, with future Call of Duty releases pushed out of day-one inclusion in exchange.

Sony moved the other way. On May 18, 2026 it confirmed a US increase for PlayStation Plus Essential on shorter plans, effective May 20: $10.99 a month, up from $9.99, and $27.99 a quarter, up from $24.99. Annual plans were untouched at $79.99 for Essential, $134.99 for Extra and $159.99 for Premium. Subscription adoption across the wider market is tracked in these gaming subscription figures.

PSN vs Xbox Live Revenue in 2026

The fiscal calendars do not line up. Sony’s FY2025 closed March 31, 2026. Microsoft’s FY2026 closed June 30, 2026. These are each company’s latest completed full year.

Sony’s Game & Network Services segment took ¥4,685.7 billion in FY2025, essentially flat on the prior year, and posted a record ¥463.3 billion operating income, up 11.6%. That came despite a ¥120.1 billion impairment charge against Bungie. Microsoft’s Xbox revenue fell $1.7 billion, or 7%, to $21.79 billion in FY2026.

Game Pass generated nearly $5 billion in annual revenue in fiscal 2025, the first time it crossed that mark. The quarterly trend since has been negative on every reading except the first.

Amy Hood guided for a further mid-single-digit decline in Xbox content and services revenue in the September 2026 quarter. Satya Nadella said Microsoft expects to return the business to growth in fiscal 2027.

PSN vs Xbox Live Hardware in 2026

Sony shipped 93.7 million PS5 units through March 31, 2026, including 16.0 million during FY2025. Shipments have declined for three straight fiscal years.

Microsoft stopped publishing Xbox console unit sales, so no comparable manufacturer-reported figure exists. What it does report is direction: hardware revenue fell 29% across fiscal 2026. Estimates for the Series X|S install base come from third-party trackers, not Microsoft, and the gap is covered in this PS5 and Series X sales comparison alongside the Series S unit breakdown.

Digital distribution keeps tilting Sony’s mix. Digital downloads accounted for 85% of full game software sales in the January to March 2026 quarter, up from 76% for the whole of FY2024. Broader platform trends appear in this PlayStation user data set and the PS5 Pro sales figures.

What the PSN vs Xbox Live Data Shows

On the one metric both companies still publish, Sony leads and Microsoft does not compete directly: PlayStation Network is a console-anchored 125 million, while Microsoft’s 500 million spans three device categories.

On money, the two moved in opposite directions in their latest completed years. Sony’s gaming segment set a profit record. Microsoft’s Xbox revenue fell 7%, with hardware down 29%, and both companies raised entry-level subscription prices during 2026 while Microsoft cut its top tier.

FAQs

Does PSN have more users than Xbox Live in 2026?

On matched terms, yes. Sony reported 125 million PlayStation Network monthly active users in March 2026. Microsoft’s 500 million figure covers console, PC and mobile together, so it is not a comparable network count.

How many Game Pass subscribers are there compared to PS Plus?

Neither company publishes current totals. Microsoft last confirmed 34 million Game Pass members in February 2024. Sony last confirmed 47.4 million PlayStation Plus subscribers in March 2023.

Why do Reddit threads disagree on PSN vs Xbox Live subscriber numbers?

Because both companies stopped reporting. Reddit comparisons mix a 2023 Sony disclosure, a 2024 Microsoft disclosure and press estimates such as Bloomberg’s roughly 30 million Game Pass figure from July 2026.

Is Xbox Live Gold still available?

No. Xbox Live Gold ended on September 14, 2023 and members were moved to Xbox Game Pass Core at $9.99 a month. Microsoft renamed Core to Game Pass Essential on October 1, 2025.

Did Xbox Game Pass really get cheaper in 2026, as Reddit claimed?

Yes. Xbox Wire confirmed on April 21, 2026 that Ultimate fell from $29.99 to $22.99 a month and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99. Future Call of Duty titles no longer arrive at launch.
