Retro Handheld vs Modern Handheld Sales Comparison Statistics 2026

Two portable gaming categories grew at the same time in 2025. One ships millions of sub-$100 emulation devices; the other ships fewer units at four to five times the price. This retro handheld vs modern handheld sales comparison places unit volumes, market value, regional demand and 2026 price increases side by side, drawing on Nintendo’s filings, Valve’s published prices and survey, Circana’s monthly tracker and analyst shipment estimates.
Retro Handheld vs Modern Handheld Sales Comparison
Retro Handheld vs Modern Handheld Sales Comparison: 2025 Unit Volumes
The two categories are counted by different organisations using different methods, so the figures below are not like-for-like. Nintendo reports sell-in to retailers, Omdia and IDC publish analyst estimates of PC handheld sales, and Dataintelo estimates retro shipments from its own market model.
Read the two PC handheld numbers as a range rather than a contradiction. Omdia and IDC scope the category differently, and IDC’s count excludes Chinese brands such as GPD, Ayaneo and OneXPlayer.
| Category | Units | What it measures | Period |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 19.86 million | Company-reported hardware sales units | Launch to 31 Mar 2026 |
| Retro handheld consoles | ~18 million | Market-model unit shipment estimate | 2025 |
| PC gaming handhelds (Omdia) | 2.3 million | Analyst forecast of units sold | 2025 |
| PC gaming handhelds (IDC) | 1.926 million | Analyst forecast of units shipped, four brands | 2025 |

Money does not follow volume here. Dataintelo values the whole retro handheld market at $2.8 billion in 2025, against Nintendo’s net sales of ¥2,313.0 billion for the year ended 31 March 2026, up 98.6% year over year.
Retro pricing explains the gap. Dataintelo puts entry-level devices from Miyoo, Powkiddy and BittBoy at $30 to $80, Anbernic and GoRetroid mid-range units at $90 to $200, and Analogue and Hyperkin premium hardware at $200 to $400. Brand-level splits sit in our retro handheld unit estimates by manufacturer.
How Fast Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Shipping?
Nintendo added 3.82 million Switch 2 units in the April-June 2026 quarter. Software reached 58.17 million units life-to-date over the same period.
| Reporting date | Switch 2 hardware | Switch 2 software |
|---|---|---|

| 31 Mar 2026 | 19.86 million | 48.71 million |
| 30 Jun 2026 | 23.68 million | 58.17 million |

Nintendo’s own guidance is more restrained than that run rate. The company forecasts 16.50 million Switch 2 hardware units and 60.00 million software units for the year ending March 2027, below the 19.86 million hardware units of the prior fiscal year.
The original Switch remains the larger installed platform at 156.59 million hardware units as of 30 June 2026. Full generational totals sit in our lifetime Switch hardware breakdown.
How Visible Is the Steam Deck on Steam?
Valve’s monthly survey is opt-in and anonymous, so it describes the systems of participating accounts rather than the whole Steam population. In August 2026, the Steam Deck GPU was recorded on 0.43% of surveyed systems, down 0.04 points on July.
SteamOS Holo 64 bit sat at 0.82% of all surveyed systems and 21.07% within the Linux-only view, where CachyOS reached 15.47%. Longer-run movement in those shares is covered in our Steam Deck shipment and adoption figures.
| Survey line item | Share of surveyed systems | Monthly change |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | 93.95% | +0.28 |
| Linux | 3.90% | −0.11 |
| SteamOS Holo 64 bit | 0.82% | −0.07 |
| Steam Deck GPU | 0.43% | −0.04 |

Which Retro Handheld Types Sell Best?
Multi-platform emulation devices, the Anbernic and Miyoo class running several system libraries from one build, hold the largest share of retro handheld value and the fastest projected growth.
| Product type | Value share (2025) | CAGR (2026-2034) |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-platform consoles | 38.4% | 9.3% |
| 32/64-bit consoles | 27.1% | 8.6% |
| 16-bit consoles | 21.3% | 7.8% |
| 8-bit consoles | 13.2% | 5.2% |

Dataintelo puts Anbernic at roughly 28% of global retro handheld unit shipments in 2025 and the global installed base above 85 million units as of early 2026.
Cartridge platforms sit outside that emulation trend. Blaze Entertainment announced one million physical Evercade cartridges sold on 28 May 2024, five years after the platform launched. Broader category context appears in our retro console resurgence data.
Retro Handheld vs Modern Handheld Sales Comparison by Region
North America is the largest retro handheld market by value, yet Dataintelo projects it growing slower than every region except Latin America.
| Region | Value share (2025) | CAGR (2026-2034) |
|---|---|---|
| North America | 34.2% | 7.6% |
| Europe | 27.8% | 8.4% |
| Asia Pacific | 24.6% | 10.2% |
| Latin America | 7.2% | 7.9% |
| Middle East & Africa | 6.2% | 8.8% |

Trade policy sits underneath the United States picture. Anbernic told customers on 21 April 2025 that it was suspending all orders shipping from China to the United States, directing buyers to its US warehouse stock instead.
The duty-free threshold those direct shipments relied on has not returned. US Customs and Border Protection moved the indefinite suspension of the de minimis exemption from executive order into regulation on 24 June 2026.
Why Are Handheld Prices Rising in 2026?
Valve raised Steam Deck OLED prices on 27 May 2026, telling customers the hardware had not changed and that the new prices reflected component costs and global logistical challenges.
| Model | Previous US price | Price from 27 May 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck OLED 512GB | $549 | $789 |
| Steam Deck OLED 1TB | $649 | $949 |

Nintendo moved in the same direction. The US price of the Switch 2 rose from $449.99 to $499.99 on 1 September 2026, after a Japanese increase from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980 on 25 May 2026.
Circana’s July 2026 tracker shows what higher prices did to the US market. Hardware spending fell 29% to $282 million, the lowest July total since 2020, while unit sales dropped 39% and the average price paid for a new unit rose 16% to $542.
| Category | July 2026 spending | Change vs July 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Total | $4,528 million | −10% |
| Content | $4,068 million | −9% |
| Hardware | $282 million | −29% |
| Accessories | $178 million | −6% |

Circana still projects a record year overall. US consumer spending on hardware, content and accessories reached $60.7 billion in 2025, up 1.4% on 2024, and Circana forecasts a 3% rise to $62.8 billion in 2026, above the $61.7 billion record set in 2021.
Retro Handheld vs Modern Handheld Sales Comparison After the Sale
Omdia’s August 2025 research forecast the PC handheld category roughly doubling by the end of the decade, from a 2024 base of 1.7 million units sold.
Both categories are growing. Only the modern side reports recurring revenue attached to the hardware.
Nintendo disclosed 34 million Nintendo Switch Online memberships as of 30 September 2025, alongside 400 million registered Nintendo Accounts and 128 million annual playing users. Tier and pricing detail sits in our Switch Online membership breakdown.
Retro handhelds report no equivalent, because their content is supplied by the owner. Dataintelo notes that most emulation-based devices operate in a legally ambiguous space over pre-loaded ROM content, which is also why usage shows up in emulator platform data rather than publisher revenue.
That structural difference, not unit volume, is the variable a manufacturer or distributor should model first.
