How Many Handhelds Has Anbernic Sold?
Anbernic does not publish unit sales. The most specific estimate comes from Dataintelo, which puts the company at about 28% of global retro handheld unit shipments in 2025.
That share sits inside a category Dataintelo sizes at roughly 18 million new units shipped in 2025. The firm reports 12.3% year-over-year growth in unit shipments and an installed base above 85 million units as of early 2026.
Dataintelo ranks Anbernic first by unit volume, while naming Analogue the leader in revenue per unit above $200. Its report also credits Anbernic with more than 12 new distinct SKUs a year.

Anbernic Handheld Console Sales in a $2.8 Billion Retro Market
Dataintelo values the retro handheld console market at $2.8 billion in 2025, up from $1.6 billion in 2019. The firm projects $5.6 billion by 2034, an 8.1% CAGR over 2026–2034.
Its scope covers 8-bit, 16-bit, 32/64-bit and multi-platform consoles. Multi-platform consoles, the class that includes Anbernic’s RG35XX, held the largest product share at 38.4% of 2025 revenue.

Early-bird windows ran 72 hours on the RG557, RG477M, RG SP and RG DS Plus. The published discounts were $15, $20, $7 and $10 respectively.
Two price clusters show up in this set: clamshells under $100 and Dimensity 8300 Android devices above $230 at list. Dataintelo, by contrast, files Anbernic under a $90 to $200 mid-range tier.

How Much RAM Has Anbernic Cut Since 2025?
The RG34XXSP launched in May 2025 with 2GB of LPDDR4. In January 2026 Anbernic halved that to 1GB at the same price.
A May 2026 teardown posted to r/ANBERNIC found a single 512MB LPDDR3 chip in one unit. Anbernic told Tom’s Hardware that 1GB is the current standard and called 512MB units “an unexpected error.”
The company offered affected buyers a replacement through after-sales service. Tom’s Hardware placed the change in the context of the ongoing memory shortage.

RG DS vs RG DS Plus
The RG DS ships with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and Android 14 or Linux. The RG DS Plus uses the same Rockchip RK3568 chip with 1GB of RAM, no built-in eMMC storage and Linux only.
List prices stand at $99.99 and $94.99. The RG SP, a Game Boy Advance SP-style clamshell aimed at libraries like those in our best retro games data, also carries 1GB.

On April 21, 2025, Anbernic suspended all orders shipping from China to the United States, citing US tariff policy changes. Engadget noted the move came alongside the end of the $800 de minimis duty exemption.
