How to Create Kahoot

Kahoot is a game-based quiz platform used in classrooms, team meetings, and casual gatherings. Building a game takes a few minutes once you know where to look. This guide walks through every step — from account setup to launching your first live session.

What You Need to Create a Kahoot

You can access Kahoot through any modern browser or the mobile app. Head to create.kahoot.it/auth/login to sign in or register. Supported login methods include Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Clever.

  • A browser or the Kahoot mobile app (iOS or Android)
  • A Google, Microsoft, Apple, or Clever account to sign in
  • Users under 13 in the US (or under 16 elsewhere) must use third-party login — email sign-in is not available
  • Kahoot works on computers, phones, and tablets

Educators should check with their school or district before subscribing — bundled plans are often available at reduced cost.

Free vs. Paid Features in Kahoot Create

Free accounts support quiz and true/false question types, which is enough for most basic games. Additional formats and options require a paid plan.

Steps to Create a Kahoot from Scratch

The process is identical whether you’re building a classroom quiz or a trivia game for friends.

  1. Log into your account at create.kahoot.it. On mobile, open the app and make sure you’re signed in.
  2. Click the green Create button at the top of the page, then select New kahoot. On the app, tap Create at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Choose a blank canvas or pick a template. Starred templates require a paid plan.
  4. Click Settings (or the title area) to add a title, description, cover image, and language. This can be done now or before saving.
  5. Click Add question and select a question type. Type your question in the text box, then add answer options below.
  6. Click the correct answer to mark it. At least one answer must be marked correct for quiz-type questions.
  7. Add an image by selecting Find and Insert Media. This is optional but improves engagement.
  8. Set a time limit per question. The default is 20 seconds — adjust per difficulty.
  9. Repeat for each additional question. Your changes save automatically as you go.
  10. Click Done / Save in the top-right corner when finished. On mobile, tap the three-dot menu, then Preview to review before saving.
Kahoot’s question bank holds over half a billion existing questions. Using it during creation can cut build time significantly — search directly from the Add Question panel.

How to Set Game Visibility After You Kahoot Create

Once saved, find your game under the Library tab and click the visibility icon in the info bar.

Public

Anyone on Kahoot can find and play it via search.

Free
Private

Only shareable within Kahoot itself. Default for accounts under age limits.

Publisher Plan
Unlisted

Shareable via direct link but hidden from search results.

Accounts belonging to users under 13 (US) or 16 (other regions) are permanently set to Private and cannot be changed.

How to Play a Kahoot Game After You Create It

Open your saved game and click Start. A PIN appears on the host’s screen. Players go to kahoot.it on a separate device (or use the app), enter the PIN, and pick a username.

  1. Open your saved game and click Start.
  2. Share the PIN displayed on your screen with all players.
  3. Players visit kahoot.it and enter the PIN along with a display name.
  4. Wait for all players to join — their names appear on the host screen as they connect.
  5. Click Start again to begin. The host controls pacing throughout.

You can also assign kahoot as a student-paced challenge — questions and answers display directly on each player’s device without needing a shared screen. For the player-side experience, see the full Kahoot join guide.

Importing Content Instead of Creating from Scratch

Premium+ and EDU subscribers can import slides from PowerPoint, PDF, or Keynote directly into the creator. Kahoot also accepts spreadsheet uploads for bulk question import — download the official template from the creator panel to format your questions correctly.

Kahoot’s AI creation tool, available on supported plans, can generate a full set of questions from a topic prompt. It’s available on both web and mobile. If you want to dig further into platform-specific game creation, creating a kit in Gimkit follows a similar flow worth reviewing alongside this.
