Golf Card Game Rules Review

Golf is a traditional draw-and-discard card game with no credited designer, publisher or release year. It also goes by Polish Polka, Turtle (four cards), Hara Kiri (six cards) and Crazy Nines (nine cards). As in the sport, the lowest score wins. One deck seats 2 to 8 players of any age, and nine holes take about 20 to 45 minutes. This review covers the rules, the main variants and who should play it.

Golf Card Game Components: What’s in the Box?

Golf has no box. You need a standard 52-card deck and a score pad.

  • Extra decks for Nine Card, Ten Card and large Six Card games.
  • Two jokers per deck, used only in some variants.
  • A pencil and paper for scores.

Use plastic-coated cards. A creased corner gives away a hidden card.

Golf Card Game Review: Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Free if you already own a deck.
  • Teaches in about two minutes.
  • Blind swaps create tension. Your 3 might replace a King or a Queen.
  • Seats 2 to 8 on one deck, more with extra decks.
  • Five layouts plus Cambio add variety.

Cons

  • Luck decides many holes. A late King can beat careful memory play.
  • House rules vary, so agree on scoring first.
  • Memory demands can frustrate younger kids.
  • Outside Cambio, you affect opponents only through discards.

How to Play Golf the Card Game

Setting Up a Hole of Golf

Deal each player 4 cards face down in a 2×2 square. The rest form the draw pile. Flip its top card to start the discard pile.

Each player secretly looks at their two nearest cards, once. Peek later and you must replace that card.

Taking a Turn in Golf

Play starts left of the dealer and moves clockwise. Pick one option.

  1. Draw from the draw pile. Swap it for any layout card without looking, and discard the old card face up. Or discard the drawn card.
  2. Take the top discard. It must replace one of your cards.
  3. Knock and keep your layout.

After a knock, everyone else gets one final turn but can’t knock. Then all cards flip for scoring.

Six Card Golf and Other Golf Variants

Six Card Golf uses 2 columns of 3, and swapped-in cards stay face up. When one player shows all six, the others get one last turn.

Eight Card Golf uses a 4×2 grid. Nine Card Golf needs three of a kind in a column to score zero. Ten Card Golf uses a 5×2 grid.

Cambio: Golf With Power Cards

In Cambio, a drawn 7 or 8 lets you peek at your own card. A 9 or 10 shows an opponent’s card. A Jack blind-swaps two cards, and a Queen lets you look at two, then swap them.

Golf Card Game Mechanics and Strategy

Hidden information drives Golf. You know two of four cards, so every blind swap is a gamble. Forgetting where you placed a King costs as much as drawing a Queen.

Six Card Golf adds set collection. Twos are the trap: two separate 2s score -4, but paired in a column they score 0.

Knocking sets the pace. Knock on 6 points and opponents must gamble to catch you.

FAQ

Is Golf the card game good for beginners?

Yes. The only skills needed are adding small numbers and remembering a few cards. Start with Four Card Golf and the basic scoring table, then add Six Card Golf pairs or jokers once everyone knows the flow of a hole.

How long does a game of Golf take?

A single hole usually takes two to five minutes. A full nine-hole game runs about 20 to 45 minutes, depending on player count and variant. Playing 18 holes roughly doubles that time, so agree on the length before the first deal.

What’s the best player count for Golf?

Four players is the sweet spot for Four Card Golf. The discard pile moves fast enough to stay interesting, and waits between turns stay short. Two players works well for a quicker, more tactical game, and Six Card Golf handles bigger groups with extra decks.

How many decks do you need to play Golf?

One standard deck covers Four Card Golf for up to 8 players and Six Card Golf for 2 to 4. Six Card Golf with 4 to 8 players uses two decks, and larger groups use three. Nine and Ten Card Golf need at least two decks.

What games are similar to Golf the card game?

Skyjo is the closest boxed game, with a grid of hidden cards and column matches. Cambio adds power cards to the same base rules. Rummy shares the draw-and-discard turn but asks you to build sets and runs instead of cutting points.
