Steam Workshop Usage and the Most-Modded Games of 2026

Steam Workshop statistics highlighting 50M+ user-made items, 3,783 workshops, popular game mods, and Steam's 2026 usage records.

Valve counts more than 50 million user-made items across over 3,000 Workshop-enabled games, but it has never published a Workshop subscriber total. This guide to Steam Workshop usage covers Valve’s April 2026 figures, a November 5, 2026 check of the live Workshop directory, category counts from Tabletop Simulator’s Workshop, the 2026 redesign timeline, and Steam’s latest audience records.

How Much Is Steam Workshop Used in 2026?

Valve’s newest Workshop totals come from its April 7, 2026 beta announcement. Over 3,000 games had Workshop enabled, with more than 50 million items uploaded across them.

For usage, Valve gave two qualitative measures. Millions of players regularly subscribe to and vote on items, and millions of users browse the Workshop every month.

Valve has not released an exact subscriber count, a monthly active user number, or a year-on-year Workshop growth rate. None of these appear in its Workshop announcements from December 2023 through May 2026.

How many games have Steam Workshop?

Valve’s own directory offers a fresher count than the April “over 3,000” figure. The Browse All Workshops page listed 3,783 workshops when checked on November 5, 2026.

The two figures measure slightly different things. Valve’s April number counts games with Workshop enabled, while the directory number is how many workshop entries the browse page returns.

36,593 Board Game Uploads: Tabletop Simulator’s Workshop by Category

Valve’s announcements give no per-game totals, but each game’s Workshop page shows live tag counts. Tabletop Simulator’s page gives the clearest view of board game content on the platform.

Board Games is the largest Game Category tag at 36,593 items. Strategy Games follows at 31,052, then Card Games at 27,735.

Creators can apply several tags to one item, so these counts overlap and cannot be added into one total.

Fans of cooperative board games will find 6,595 items under the Cooperative Games tag. Party Games sits just behind at 6,440.

Players hunting for role-playing board games have 12,876 tagged items to browse. Wargames is close behind at 12,187.

The smallest tags are Dexterity Games at 521 and Memory Games at 749. Both trail the puzzle board game tag, which holds 1,438 items.

These counts measure uploaded items, not players or sales. Retail and market data for the physical hobby sits in separate board game popularity statistics.

Steam Workshop Redesign Timeline, January to May 2026

Three dated 2026 changes affect how players find and subscribe to items. Valve announced each one in its Workshop news feed.

DateChange
January 8, 2026Workshop items can specify supported game versions
April 7, 2026Opt-in beta of the redesigned browse page opens

Version support works only after a developer enables “Game Branch Versions” for the game. When several versions of an item match a player’s game build, Steam downloads the most recently uploaded one.

Items with no version range are treated as compatible with any build. Mod authors set ranges under an item’s Change Notes tab.

The browse redesign added Quick View, faster filtering, developer-set filters per item type, and better handling on mobile, Steam Deck, and Big Picture mode. Valve says other Workshop pages will follow, with no timeline given.

How did players respond to the 2026 Workshop updates?

Comment counts on Valve’s Workshop announcements are one visible engagement signal. The April 7, 2026 beta post carried 2,147 comments on November 5, 2026, against 1,314 on the May 27 release post and 686 on the January 8 version post.

The December 18, 2023 Collections post holds 3,773 comments, the most of the five posts listed. Older posts have been open for comments longer.

Does Steam Workshop Usage Track Steam’s Concurrent User Records?

Valve publishes no Workshop growth series, so Steam’s audience is the closest dated context. Based on SteamDB data, Steam set its latest concurrent user record on October 11, 2026, at 43,505,724.

That peak followed 42,686,616 in March 2026 and 42,042,778 on January 11, 2026.

At GDC in March 2026, Valve said Steam had passed 42 million peak concurrent users. In-game concurrents hit a record 13.9 million, and Valve’s Tom Giardino said both figures were about double their levels five years earlier.

Download volume rose as well. Valve’s Steam Year in Review 2025 reported about 80 exabytes delivered in 2024 and 100 exabytes in 2025, averaging 274 petabytes of installs and updates per day.

Neither measure isolates Workshop activity. Concurrent figures count anyone running the Steam client, and Valve’s download totals do not break out Workshop items.
