Heroes of Barcadia is a dungeon crawl where your health bar is a pint glass. Madison O’Neil designed and illustrated it for Rollacrit in 2022, and the hook is the Liquid Life System: lose hit points, drink from your cup. It plays 2 to 6 players in 30 to 90 minutes, rated 21+. Monsters have stolen every drink in Barcadia and stashed the hoard in a shifting dungeon. Players build that dungeon tile by tile and race each other to the Grand Drink Guardian.

This is a competitive game, not a co-op one. The other heroes are rivals, and the loot cards exist mostly so you can ruin their turn.

The cups survive repeated washing without the art wearing off. The tiles have one real flaw: they grip the table, so flipping one is a chore. Most groups slide a loot card underneath instead.

Pros

• The Liquid Life System ties a game action to something physical. Fail a roll against the Jaegermonster and you drink the damage.
• Rules explain in about five minutes, so non-gamers start playing almost immediately.
• Every dungeon is different, because players lay the hex tiles themselves during setup.
• O’Neil’s cartoon art is funny and the pun names land. Merlo the Saucerer is a good example.
• Waterproof PVC means spills wipe off instead of ruining the game.

Cons

• Almost everything is random. Tile reveals, power-up draws, and combat rolls leave you little to decide.
• The tiles are hard to pick up off the table.
• Cleanup means washing six pint glasses, and trap tokens rarely come into play.
• Hex tiles do not always align on longer loops, which starts arguments about which rooms are adjacent.

How to Play Heroes of Barcadia

Setup

Place the starting tiles in the middle of the table. Each player picks a character cup, fills it, and takes the matching d20 and signature move card.

Players then lay room tiles facedown around the start, building hallways, loops, or open plazas. Everyone draws three loot cards, then rolls for turn order.

Turn Structure

You take one action per turn. Reveal an adjacent room, move through up to two rooms you have already revealed, or attempt the final boss.

Revealed tiles show a portal, free loot, a power-up, or a monster. Monsters are the usual result. Roll your d20, add loot and power-up bonuses, and try to beat the monster’s level. Win and you collect the reward. Lose and you drink the listed damage.

Team battles pull another player in for a share of the loot. Boss battles hand the dice to an opponent, who rolls for the monster and takes damage if they lose.

Before your action you can duel a player standing in your way. Both roll a d20, the loser drinks 10 hit points, and a winning attacker swaps places with the defender.

Winning

Collect three power-ups, then spend an action attacking the Grand Drink Guardian. Beat it and you take the Drink Hoard and the win.

Heroes of Barcadia Game Mechanics

Two systems carry the game: tile placement and dice rolling. Players build the map during setup, so the layout changes every session.

Combat is one d20 roll against a target number. Loot and power-up bonuses are your only lever, which makes holding the right card the closest thing to strategy here.

The Liquid Life System replaces a health track with your cup, so damage has an immediate physical cost. That separates it from most dungeon crawler board games, where a lost fight just moves a token down a track.

Who Should Play Heroes of Barcadia

This is built for adults who drink and want a structure around it. If nobody at the table is drinking, the central system does nothing.

It works best with people who rarely play board games. A group that would otherwise play King’s Cup sees it as a clear upgrade.

Hobby gamers who want decisions will be bored. Judge it against other drinking board games, not against your usual shelf.

Five or six players is the sweet spot. At two, dueling and team battles lose their point, and there are better two-player options. Save it for a birthday or house party alongside your other party board games.
